      Pressure swing adsorption (abbr. PSA) is a gas separation technology. It bases on the different adsorption performance of various molecules in molecular sieves to separate the gases from their mixture. Air separation uses air as feed, and it can separate nitrogen and oxygen from the air by the selective adsorption of oxygen and nitrogen on a kind of high-effective and high-selectivity solid adsorbents. Separating nitrogen and oxygen with carbon molecular sieve is resulted from the different diffusion rate of the two gases in the molecular sieve, for the smaller the molecule (say oxygen) the more rapidly it diffuses into the solid phase of the molecular sieve. In such a way nitrogen can be enriched in the gaseous phase. Along the diffusing process, oxygen will be adsorbed to equilibrium in the molecular sieve, and then oxygen may be desorbed from the molecular sieve just by depressurization, for the adsorption capacity will decrease with pressure decrease. This process is called regeneration. Two towers are usually connected parallel to perform adsorption by pressurization and desorption by depressurization in turn, in order to obtain continuous flow of product nitrogen.

      Air compression: Air is compressed to the desired pressure (7 - 8 bar) by a compressor, and conveyed into an air feed tank in which a part of oil and water moisture condenses and drains out of the bottom of the tank. The air stream is kept at constant flowrate and constant pressure for the nitrogen producing system.

      Air purification: Water moisture, oil and dust in the compressed air are removed through a refrigerating dryer and a filter, which supplies clean air feed for the following PSA system.

      Nitrogen produced by PSA: The clean compressed air is conveyed into the principal devices of producing nitrogen, and switched automatically between the adsorbing tower to adsorb oxygen and the desorbing tower to desorb oxygen in turn by pneumatic valve control, and now nitrogen is enriched at the top of the towers and transported into a surge tank through pipelines. Then the steady nitrogen is conveyed to the nitrogen-using spots after detection and measure.
